Central German airports act as job engines – employment figures continue to rise

17,142 people were employed at Leipzig/Halle and Dresden Air-ports at the end of 2022* – the figure also includes all the com-panies and public authorities based there. This means employ-ment has risen by 6.3 percent compared to the previous year. Overall, 226 companies are based at the two airports.

“Our airports are dynamic catalysts for the entire business region in Central Germany. They’re important local economic factors and provide a broad range of growth in employment, mobility as well as investments for attracting companies amounting to billions of euros in their surrounding areas,” says Götz Ahmelmann, the CEO of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, stressing the airports’ importance.

Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG now employs 1,375 people, 3.8 percent more than in 2021.

The company is planning to hire more than 100 additional employees during the current year.

Overall, 13,066 people work at 118 companies at Leipzig/Halle Airport, Europe’s third-largest cargo airport; this represents growth of 5.8 percent compared to the figure in 2021. As a result, the number of jobs at the airport site has more than doubled since 2010.

The most significant growth has taken place in the services and public authorities sectors – the figure there has grown by more than 33 percent to 754.


The number of employees in the cargo transhipment, airlines and freight handling as well as the freight forwarding, logistics and warehousing sectors was 10,090 on the reporting date, a figure that was 6.7 percent higher than on the comparative date in the previous year.

4,076 people were employed at 108 companies at Dresden Airport. This represents 7.7 percent more than in 2021.

Particular growth has occurred in the retail and services sectors, as well as in the aircraft industry and maintenance and repair work.
