Development in passenger numbers at the Central German Airports – holiday travel and flights to hubs very popular
Leipzig/Halle Airport
More than 1,349,600 passengers passed through Leipzig/Halle Airport between January and August – approximately 41 percent more than in the previous year. The demand was particularly high for flights to holiday regions around the Mediterranean Sea, on the Red Sea and Black Sea and to Atlantic destinations. About three quarters of all those flying from Leipzig/Halle used these services for their holiday travel. Almost 310,000 passengers flew on services to sunshine destinations during the summer holiday weeks in July and August.
New destinations to the Gulf from the autumn onwards
It will be possible to fly non-stop to new more sunshine destinations, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, from October and November onwards. The tour operator, Etihad Holidays, is offering two weekly non-stop flights to the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, from 17 October onwards – for the first time from Leipzig/Halle.
The SmartLynx airline will also be providing two flights a week from the Central German airport to Dubai for the tour operator, FTI, starting on 9 November.
Dresden Airport
Almost 599,000 passengers used Dresden Airport during the first eight months of the year, an increase of 13 percent over the previous year. Services to the international hubs in Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Zurich, which connect Dresden to the global networks of Lufthansa, KLM and Swiss, particularly enjoyed significant growth.
Further growth in the number of tourist flights
Turkey is one of the most popular holiday destinations. More than 63,000 passengers have used the flights from Dresden so far this year, six percent more than in 2022. In the light of this trend, two new airlines are launching additional flights to Antalya during the next few weeks. SunExpress will take off for Turkey twice a week from 16 September onwards.
The Turkish operator, Southwind Airlines, will connect Dresden with Antalya three times a week starting on 29 September.
Overall, five airlines will then be offering as many as 22 flights a week from Dresden to this popular holiday region in the Mediterranean area.
